What is an Interface board?

Digi's supplies RF modules to OEM and Integrator companies to enable wireless communication for new and existing electronic systems. The RF modules require a regulated power supply and a CMOS (0-5V) or TTL (0 - 3V) level serial interface.

Because a large number of applications interface using RS232 or RS485/RS422 voltages, Digi offers an "Interface Board" (p/n: XIB-R, XTIB-R, or XBIB-R) that accepts a wide DC voltage rage typically between 7 - 12V and provides signal level conversion to either RS232 or RS485/422 voltages. This allows the radio modems to connect easily to existing systems.

Because of the prevalent use of Digi RF modules connected to PC desktops and laptops, we also offer a USB model (p/n:XIB-U, XTIB-U and XBIB-U) that draws power from the USB port (may require an external power supply) and includes the drivers (Windows 98-XP ,Windows Vista / 7 64-bit, Windows 8 32 bit and 64-bit, Linux and OSX) to configure a virtual comm port in the operating system that any application can access as though it were a standard serial port. This device is best described as a USB connected serial radio since it is optimized to transport serial port data at standard baud rates (1200 to 57600 bps), not replace a USB cable which requires much higher data rates (1.5 to 45 Mbps).

Many OEMs can save cost by making their own interface board designed to exactly meet the specific requirements of their application. Digi interface boards are designed to support many operating modes so they can be used in a wide number of applications.
